Sports Therapy
World Class Treatment
Sports Therapy focuses on the prevention of injury and finding the best ways to get you back to your healthy, vibrant best. My treatments aim to alleviate postural problems, repetitive strain injuries, back, neck and shoulder pain or specific injury conditions experienced by athletes.
However, Sports Therapy also works very well for the more sedentary and is very effective in treating the more “every day” pain; perhaps you’re a student or an office worker, who spends a considerable part of the day at a desk. Or, perhaps you’re someone who drives a lot and spends long periods at the wheel. The human body has amazing strength and resilience. However, our muscles, tendons and ligaments can get overloaded or damaged. Once this happens, our bodies start to over compensate (hunching our shoulders for example), causing pain and dysfunction. Sports Therapy will use the principles of sports and exercise sciences to reduce and get rid of your discomfort. You’ll benefit from rapid relief as well as an effective future maintenance programme to minimise the risk of further injury.
During your first session, we’ll review your medical history and discuss your symptoms and detail your injuries. I’ll assess you in order to see the cause and the extent of your pain and discomfort and to diagnose the root cause of the issue. Treatment sessions can include some or all of the following techniques:
Postural and Functional Assessment
Deep Tissue Massage
Sports Massage
Tui Na (Chinese massage and manipulation)
Acupressure massage
Soft Tissue Mobilisation
MET (Muscle Energy Technique)
RI (Reciprocal Inhibition)
Trigger Point Therapy
Joint manipulation and mobilisation, to reduce pain and stiffness
Muscle re-education, to improve muscle control
Exercise programs, to strengthen your muscles, improve movement and deliver great long term benefits

Acupuncture
Putting You First
If you haven’t tried acupuncture before do consider this gentle and highly effective treatment. Acupuncture is totally safe, with a growing body of evidence-based research to support its efficacy; It’s a powerful way to treat a range of injuries or debilitating conditions without the need for drugs and its delivery enables swift recovery from injury.
You may have lower or upper back pain, muscular or joint aches and pains, muscle stiffness or joint mobility issues. It may be that you’re suffering from more general healthcare issues such as migraines or post-operative nausea. You may simply feel out of sorts or experiencing stress; acupuncture can help alleviate all of these conditions as well as an array of other health issues.
I am able to quickly diagnose the cause of your pain and treat you accordingly. Fine, sterile, single-use needles will be inserted into specific points to affect the flow of your body’s vital energy. The nerves in your muscles are stimulated to just the right degree allowing the release of endorphins, your body’s natural pain killer, which in turn enables your body to allow the healing process to start. Everybody experiences acupuncture differently, you may feel a mild tingling sensation or a dull ache, but you certainly won’t be in pain or uncomfortable.
As a Combination Therapist I use a range of acupuncture techniques. Nothing is pre-prescribed and each patient and patient treatment session is unique, reacting to your body’s presentation and delivering the most effective combinations of treatment.
Acupuncture treatments may include:
Traditional Chinese (TCA)
Auricular (ear)
Microsystems and Electro
Semi-Permanent Needles
Battlefield Acupuncture

Massage
Patient-Centered Treatment
Other therapists have a limited selection of “tools” in their toolbox and can only deliver minor or superficial release of soft tissue. I have the most comprehensive techniques available and have the ability to correct soft tissue, structure and nerves and ensure smooth and efficient movement. The focus is to help you recover from pain and remove injury as quickly as possible.
At our first meeting, I’ll carry out an assessment and will be able to diagnose your condition during this initial session. We’ll set goals and outcomes, factoring in your general health, lifestyle and activity levels. You’ll be able to regularly measure and track your objectives.
Deep Tissue Massage
Deep tissue massage is directed at the deeper layers of connective tissue, fascia and muscle. Primarily used for injury rehabilitation and chronic muscular pain, it is also very effective in reducing inflammation and deep nagging muscular pain. Used with other massage techniques it is very effective in targeting pain from tendinitis and arthritis and is exceptionally effective for chronically tight muscles, postural correction and repetitive strain injury.
Acupressure Massage
Acupressure Massage uses the same points as acupuncture, with these being used to stimulate the body’s natural self-curative abilities. It is very effective at releasing muscular tension and promoting an increased flow of blood and oxygen and is a great alternative for patients who are nervous or afraid of needles but still want to experience the same fantastic results.
For example, a nagging headache may be caused by tension in the shoulder and neck muscles and by skilful targeting of the correct acupressure points discomfort and symptoms can be relieved and further issues halted from developing in the future.
Soft Tissue Release
Soft tissue release deals directly with the reason for injury and pain with muscles, fascia and connective tissue. This technique affects the way that scar tissue is formed and breaks up the fibrotic mass of scar tissue and allows muscles to return to their natural length. Once the tissue has been restored to its resting length there is an immediate cessation of pain and reduction of inflammation.
Tui Na
Tui Na is the ancient system of manual therapy and is rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). The technique is applied using over a hundred hand, finger and arm techniques to apply pressure, smooth tissue and release tension from the body. Soft manipulations form part of the technique allowing joints and connective tissue to be released in sympathy with soft tissue release. The effect can be calming and soothing or used dynamically to create an immediate release, reacting to the body’s release and following this by tracing and reacting to the body’s needs. This skill could be compared to “dancing the dance”.
Treatments and techniques using massage therapy could include:
Deep Tissue Massage
Acupressure Massage
Soft Tissue Release
Tui Na (Chinese massage and manipulation)
Muscle re-education, to improve muscle control
Further maintenance sessions are also recommended to manage your condition, keep you in good shape or just as a regular MOT for your body and spirit.
Modern combination massage therapy is one of the most innovative advances in physical treatment and can deliver fantastic results.
