Tape Magic

Writer: David HurleyDavid Hurley

A lot of people use Kinesio tape to apply to injuries or to support joints that they assume are weak and need support.

The tape is in fact highly technical and just wrapping it round as tight as possible is not what’s needed, in fact this approach could do more harm than good.

For instance, with the injury do you know if you need to support, offload or increase the function of the muscle? No!! Then you shouldn’t be using the tape.

The tape stretches one way and you need to know which muscle, joint or soft tissue component needs the intervention, which way to stretch the tape, how much to stretch it, 10%, 20%, 40% etc. etc. and how big the anchors need to be.

Kinesio tape can also be used as an aid to enhance lymphatic drainage, allowing strains and pulls to heal faster. Again this is highly technical in tape patterns, stretch %, direction and even which pattern of tape cuts to use. The pictures here demonstrate a complicated set of lymphatic drainage tapings for a long term condition.

If you have an injury that won’t shift, want to keep training and need support or would just like to experience the magic of the tape, then contact me for more information and to book an appointment on 07803 255643.
